Call for Volunteer Interpreters on Samos (Arabic/Farsi - English)

Job Title: Interpreter

Location: Samos, Greece (Vathy)

Position Type: full-time or part-time

Salary: unpaid (Our organization relies on volunteers. However, if your financial situation would prevent you from applying, we can discuss this in the interview and find solutions, e.g. application to ERASMUS grants. We strongly encourage all applications.)

Starting date: as soon as possible

Project description

The project provides legal information to refugees on the island of Samos. The team consists of three to four legal counsellors and two to three translators. They offer legal information workshops, individual sessions for applicants before their asylum interview and assistance with family reunification applications. Upon your assignment, the project will also engage in appeal procedures for rejected applicants, accompany applicants to interviews and represent them at court. For the future it is planned to found a new organisation which takes over the project from the RLC Berlin with the aim to professionalize it even more. This will not take place within the three months period of time in question.

Role and Responsibilities

You will support our team of legal advisors with your language skills. Every day we have numerous appointments to inform people about their rights in the asylum procedure or to prepare them for their asylum hearing. Our team works in English. Therefore, it will be your task to translate what is said by our legal advisors and the people seeking advice.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

· Proficiency in Arabic and/ or Farsi

· Proficiency in English

· Passion for issues of human rights law

· High resilience and flexibility

· Experience in teamwork

· Legal knowledge is not required!

Preferred Skills are

· Experience in interpreting counselling situations with refugees in matters of asylum law (e.g. interview preparation)

· Experience in the non-profit sector
